==Early life, education, and academic career==
The grandson of Italian immigrants, William James Pascrell Jr. was born in [[Paterson, New Jersey]], on January 25, 1937, the son of Roffie J. He served in the [[United States Army]] and United States Army reserves. Pascrell attended [[Fordham University]] in New York City and earned a [[bachelor's degree]] in journalism and a master's degree in philosophy.<ref name = Bio/>

He was appointed to the Paterson Board of Education and served as board president.
