==Terminology== The terms "blended learning", "hybrid learning", "technology-mediated instruction",<ref>{{Cite journal|date=January 1, 2000|title=Shift happens: online education as a new paradigm in learning|url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1096751600000324|journal=The Internet and Higher Education|language=en|volume=3|issue=1β2|pages=41β61|doi=10.1016/S1096-7516(00)00032-4|issn=1096-7516|last1=Harasim|first1=Linda|url-access=subscription}}</ref> "web-enhanced instruction", and "mixed-mode instruction" are often used interchangeably in research literature.<ref>{{cite journal|last=Martyn|first=Margie|title=The hybrid online model: Good practice|journal=Educause Quarterly|year=2003|pages=18β23}}</ref> Although the concepts behind blended learning first developed in the 1960s, the formal terminology to describe it did not take its current form until the late 1990s. One of the earliest uses of the term appears in a 1999 press release, in which the Interactive Learning Centers, an Atlanta-based education business, announced a change of name to EPIC Learning. The release mentions that "The Company currently operates 220 on-line courses, but will begin offering its Internet courseware using the company's Blended Learning methodology."<ref>{{cite web|title=Interactive Learning Centers Announces Name Change to EPIC Learning|date=March 5, 1999|publisher=The Free Library. |access-date=October 18, 2013 |url=http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Interactive+Learning+Centers+Announces+Name+Change+to+EPIC+Learning.-a054024665|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305050237/http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Interactive+Learning+Centers+Announces+Name+Change+to+EPIC+Learning.-a054024665|archive-date=March 5, 2016}}</ref> The term "blended learning" was initially vague, encompassing a wide variety of technologies and pedagogical methods in varying combinations (some making no use of technology whatsoever). In 2006, the term became more concrete with the publication of the first ''Handbook of Blended Learning'' by Bonk and Graham. Graham challenged the breadth and ambiguity of the term's definition, and defined "blended learning systems" as learning systems that "combine face-to-face instruction with computer mediated instruction".<ref>{{cite book|author=Bonk, C.J.|author2=Graham, C.R.|name-list-style=amp|year=2006|title=The handbook of blended learning environments: Global perspectives, local designs|location=San Francisco|publisher=Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer|pages=5}}</ref> In a report titled "Defining Blended Learning", researcher [[Norm Friesen]] suggests that, in its current form, blended learning "designates the range of possibilities presented by combining Internet and digital media with established classroom forms that require the physical co-presence of teacher and students".<ref name="Report:Defining Blended Learning"/>
