==Early years==
Ellis was raised a [[Seventh-day Adventist Church|Seventh-day Adventist]]. He attended [[Lismore High School|Lismore High]] and then the [[University of Sydney]] on a Sir [[Robert Menzies]] scholarship, at the same time as other notable Australians including [[Clive James]], [[Germaine Greer]], [[Les Murray (poet)|Les Murray]], [[John Bell (Australian actor)|John Bell]], [[Robert Hughes (critic)|Robert Hughes]] and [[Mungo Wentworth MacCallum|Mungo McCallum]].
