The gold had been stored at the warehouse overnight before being due to be transferred to Hong Kong the next day.<ref name="Whatever happened to Brinks-Mat?"/> In addition, they stole platinum, 1,000 carats of diamonds and $250,000 of [[traveller's cheques]].<ref name=84trial/> The total value of their haul was Β£26 million (equivalent to Β£{{Format price|{{Inflation|UK|26000000|1983}}}} in {{Inflation/year|UK}}{{Inflation/fn|UK}}).<ref name="Brink's-Mat curse strikes again" />
