==Early life and education== Koop was born in [[Brooklyn]], New York, the only child of John Everett Koop (1883β1972), a banker and descendant of 17th-century Dutch settlers, and Helen (nΓ©e Apel) Koop (1894β1970).<ref name="NYT death forceful">{{cite news|last=Noble|first=Holcomb B.|date=February 25, 2013|title=C.
