==Early life== C. R. Rao was the eighth of the ten children born to a [[Telugu people|Telugu]] [[Hindu]] family<ref>{{Cite web |title=ET Interviews: Professor C. R. Rao |url=http://korora.econ.yale.edu/et/interview/rao.pdf}}</ref><ref name="Nielsen" /> in [[Hoovina Hadagali]], [[Ballari district|Bellary]], [[Madras Presidency]], [[British Raj|Britain ruled India]] (now in [[Vijayanagara district|Vijayanagara]], [[Karnataka]], India). His schooling was completed in [[Gudur, Nellore district|Gudur]], [[Nuzvid]], [[Nandigama]], and [[Visakhapatnam]], all in the present state of [[Andhra Pradesh]].<ref name="auto"/> He received an [[Master of Science|MSc]] in [[mathematics]] from [[Andhra University]] and an [[Master of Arts|MA]] in statistics from [[Calcutta University]] in 1943.<ref name=amstat/> He obtained a PhD degree at [[King's College, Cambridge]], under [[R. A. Fisher]] in 1948, to which he added a [[Doctor of Science#The Commonwealth of Nations and Ireland|DSc]] degree, also from Cambridge, in 1965.<ref>{{Cite web |title=C. R.
