Bore 1 (the southernmost bore) and Bore 2 were completed in 1937; they are {{convert|3610|ft|abbr=on}} in length and today carry two lanes each of eastbound traffic. Bore 3, completed in 1964, is {{convert|3771|ft|abbr=on}} in length. Bore 4 (the northernmost bore), completed in 2013, is {{convert|3389|ft|abbr=on}} in length. The active [[Hayward Fault]] runs just west of the western portals of the tunnel.<ref name="USGS-km18">{{cite web|title=Digital Map of Recently Active Traces of the Hayward Fault, California|url=https://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/nca/haywardfault/tiled/gif/km18.html|website=earthquake.usgs.gov|publisher=US Geological Survey|access-date=2016-11-26}}</ref>
