== History == Before cameras became self-contained units, broadcast cameras required vast racks of control units just to generate a usable picture. In outside broadcast production, these racks took up an entire section of the OB truck and were operated by a small team of skilled engineers. These vision engineers had two roles. Firstly, they set up the CCUs at the start of a production and ensured that the picture created was of broadcast quality. This process included a lengthy alignment process in which the vision engineer would work with the camera operator, to adjust the settings on both the actual camera and the CCU in tandem.<ref>{{cite journal |title=outsidebroadcast-cameralineup-demonstration-long.mp4 |publisher=figshare |language=en |doi=10.17637/rh.5990779.v1 |date=27 March 2018|last1=Hall |first1=Nick |last2=Ellis |first2=John |last3=Murphy |first3=Amanda }}</ref> During production, it was the vision engineers' job to operate the CCUs and control both the [[Exposure (photography)|exposure]] and the [[colour balance]]. So skilled and labour-intensive was this role that each CCU required its own dedicated vision engineer.<ref>{{cite journal |title=outsidebroadcast-demonstration-visionengineers-bitesize1.mp4 |publisher=figshare |language=en |doi=10.17637/rh.6159683.v1 |date=19 April 2018|last1=Hall |first1=Nick |last2=Ellis |first2=John |last3=Murphy |first3=Amanda }}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal|last=John|first=Ellis|last2=Nick|first2=Hall|date=2017-11-09|title=ADAPT|journal=Figshare|language=en-US|doi=10.17637/rh.c.3925603.v1}}</ref>
