==Description== The Caroni Swamp is a 12,000 acre swamp <ref>{{cite web|title=Caroni Swamp and Bird Sanctuary|url=http://www.destinationtnt.com/caroni-swamp-and-bird-sanctuary/|website=Destination Trinidad & Tobago|publisher=SIGHTFACTORY Ltd|accessdate=5 May 2016}}</ref> located on the west coast of the island of Trinidad. It is one of the largest mangrove forest on the island. Caroni Swamp is protected under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance.<ref>{{cite web|title=Birding|url=http://gotrinidadandtobago.com/trinidad/birding/|website=Trinidad & Tobago The True Caribbean|publisher=Go Trinidad and Tobago|accessdate=5 May 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160411094725/http://www.gotrinidadandtobago.com/trinidad/birding/|archive-date=11 April 2016|url-status=dead}}</ref> The Caroni Swamp runs along the banks of the Caroni River and contains numerous channels, brackish and saline lagoons with intertidal mudflats. The Caroni Swamp also contains fresh water and saltwater marshes and is also known as a bird sanctuary.<ref>{{cite web|title=Ramsar|url=http://www.ramsar.org/about/history-of-the-ramsar-convention|website=History of The Ramsar Convention|publisher=The Ramsar Convention Secretariat|accessdate=5 May 2016}}</ref> The central section of the acreage is designated as a wildlife sanctuary and is the home of one of Trinidad and Tobago's national bird, the Scarlet Ibis.
