Cherkasy is situated on the high right bank of the [[Dnieper River|Dnipro River]], in the middle of the [[Kremenchuk Reservoir]]. The city occupies an area of {{convert|69|km2|sqmi|1|abbr=on}}. The city's length is {{convert|17|km|2|abbr=on}} along the [[Kremenchuk Reservoir]], while its widest point is only {{convert|8|km|2|abbr=on}}.

From the north-west, Cherkasy is surrounded by forest. === Ecology ===
The ecological situation in the city is quite stable. The cumulative [[pollution]] index {{As of|2008|lc=y}} is 7.56, average with other Ukrainian cities.
