==Early life== Graebner was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the only child of Paul Graebner, a dentist,<ref>{{cite magazine |date=31 May 1969 |title=Levels of the GameβI |url=https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1969/06/07/arthur-ashe-profile-levels-of-the-game-i |magazine=New Yorker |location=New York |access-date=2024-08-26}}</ref> and his wife, the former Janice Clark. Paul had been a moderately successful youth player.<ref>{{cite book|author=John McPhee|title=Levels of the Game|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=GDf_AwAAQBAJ&pg=PT14|date=5 June 2014|publisher=Aurum Press|isbn=978-1-78131-313-8|pages=14}}</ref> Clark won the state high-school tennis championship three times. He graduated from [[Northwestern University]], where he joined the [[Delta Upsilon]] fraternity. In 1964 he married rising American tennis player [[Carole Caldwell]].
