== Early life == Colin Archer was born in [[Larvik]] in southern Norway as the 12th of 13 children to parents who immigrated to Norway from Scotland in 1825. Before his career in naval architecture, he spent time as a farmer and administrator in [[Queensland]], Australia with [[The Archer brothers|several of his brothers]],<ref>{{Cite book|last=McDonald|first=Lorna|title=Over Earth and Ocean. The Archers of Tolderodden and Gracemere.|publisher=Central Queensland University Press|year=1991|isbn=0-7022-3145-2|location=Rockhampton, Queensland 4700, Australia|pages=138}}</ref> including David who first arrived in [[Sydney]] in 1834.
