== Forms == Computer-mediated communication can be broken down into two forms: synchronous and asynchronous.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://newtechnocomm.wordpress.com/2016/03/05/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-computer-mediated-communication-in-the-context-of-unimas-students-and-staff/|title=Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer-Mediated Communication in the Context of UNIMAS Students and Staff|last=Chin|first=Leonora|date=March 5, 2016}}</ref> Synchronous computer-mediated communication refers to communication that occurs in real-time. All parties are engaged in the communication simultaneously; however, they are not necessarily all in the same location.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|url=http://designingsocialinterfaces.com/patterns/Synchronous_vs._Asynchronous|title=Designing Social Interfaces|last1=Malone|first1=Erin|last2=Gulati|first2=Harjeet S.|access-date=2018-03-15|archive-date=2019-09-10|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190910150140/http://designingsocialinterfaces.com/patterns/Synchronous_vs._Asynchronous|url-status=dead}}</ref> Examples of synchronous communication are video chats and audio calls. On the other hand, asynchronous computer-mediated communication refers to communication that takes place when the parties engaged are not communicating in unison. In other words, the sender does not receive an immediate response from the receiver. Most forms of computer-mediated technology are asynchronous.<ref name=":0" /> Examples of asynchronous communication are [[Text messaging|text messages]] and [[email]]s.
