The word ''cynocephaly'' is taken (through Latin) from the Greek word κυνοκέφαλοι ''kynokephaloi'', plural of the word κυνοκέφαλος,<ref>[https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=urn:cts:greekLit:tlg0060.tlg001.perseus-grc1:3.35 Diodorus Siculus, Library, 3.35.5]</ref> from ''kyno–'' (combining form of κύων ''kyōn'') meaning "dog" and κεφαλή ''kephalē'' meaning "head".

The same "dog" root is found in the name ''Cynomorpha'' ("dog-shaped") for a sub-group of the [[family (biology)|family]] [[Cercopithecidae]], which contains many species of [[macaque]]s and baboons.
