He received a B.A. from the [[University of Iowa]], where he also played football and became a member of the Iowa Beta chapter of [[Sigma Alpha Epsilon]] fraternity, in 1967. He received an [[Master of Arts|M.A.]] from [[Chapman University|Chapman College]] in [[Orange, California]], in 1972. He served in the [[United States Air Force]] during the peak of the [[Vietnam War]] from 1968 to 1972, though not in [[Vietnam War|Vietnam]]. He was a founder of the Vietnam Era Veterans Caucus on Capitol Hill and was a strong supporter of the Vietnam veterans' movement.
