==Early life== David Selby was born February 5, 1941, in [[Morgantown, West Virginia]],<ref>{{cite web |title=This week in West Virginia History - Feb. 2-8 |url=https://www.register-herald.com/news/life/this-week-in-west-virginia-history---feb-2-8/article_74f4e694-cf66-557f-9ac1-ca4e5926aa79.html |website=[[The Register-Herald]] |date=February 2020 |access-date=February 5, 2023}}</ref> the son of Clyde Ira Selby, a carpenter, and his wife Sarah E. (nΓ©e McIntyre). He recalled in 2020 interview, "I enjoyed a safe, happy life; I grew up in Morgantown and still have good friends back there, people I've known since grade school. West Virginia's a fantastic place to raise kids. The environment's nurturing and positive."<ref name=RetFan11>{{cite magazine |last=Labbe |first=Rod |date=November 2020 |url=https://retrofan.org/ |title=David Selby: Beyond the Shadows |magazine=RetroFan |issue=11 |pages=3β9}}</ref> He attended [[West Virginia University]]. Midway through his time at WVU, Selby joined the cast of ''[[Honey in the Rock (play)|Honey in the Rock]]'', a [[civil war]] drama at [[New River Gorge National Park and Preserve|Grandview State Park]].
