==Early life== Soul was born on August 28, 1943, in [[Chicago]], [[Illinois]],<ref name="LarkinGE">{{cite book|title=[[The Encyclopedia of Popular Music|The Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music]]|editor-first=Colin|editor-last=Larkin|editor-link=Colin Larkin|publisher=[[Guinness World Records|Guinness Publishing]]|date=1992|edition=First|isbn=0-85112-939-0|page=2328}}</ref> and was of Norwegian descent. His mother, June Joanne (Nelson), was a teacher, and his father, Dr. Richard W.
