==Political life== Prior to his election to Westminster, he stood unsuccessfully for [[Manchester Wythenshawe (UK Parliament constituency)|Manchester Wythenshawe]] in [[1979 United Kingdom general election|1979]], being beaten by [[Labour Co-operative|Labour's]] [[Alf Morris]].
