==Background==
Born in [[Alameda, California]],<ref>{{Cite web |title=JoinCalifornia - Don Perata |url=http://www.joincalifornia.com/candidate/5388 |access-date=2023-12-27 |website=www.joincalifornia.com}}</ref> Perata is the son of Italian immigrants.  During his childhood, he helped his father, Dick, to deliver milk door-to-door for the Lakehurst Creamery in Alameda.<ref name="Perata4Mayor.Com">[http://www.perata4mayor.com/about/don Perata4Mayor.Com] {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100302193004/http://www.perata4mayor.com/about/don |date=March 2, 2010 }}</ref>  Perata graduated from Saint Joseph High School and earned his degree from [[Saint Mary's College of California]]. He taught English, [[History]], and [[Civics]] from 1966 to 1981 in [[Alameda County, California|Alameda County]] schools.  Perata has a daughter and a son.{{citation needed|date=January 2011}}
