== History == Drawn thread embroidery is a very early form of open work embroidery, and is the basis of [[lace]]. Drawn thread work from the12th century was known as Opus Tiratum and Punto Tirato from the Italian word tirare meaning to pull or draw <ref>{{Cite web |title=Heirloom Beginnings - Techniques |url=https://www.heirloombeginnings.com/techniques.html |access-date=2025-05-08 |website=www.heirloombeginnings.com}}</ref><ref name=":1" />.<ref>{{Cite book|url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/3843144|title=Needlework : an illustrated history|date=1978|publisher=Paddington Press|others=Harriet Bridgeman, Elizabeth Drury|isbn=0-448-22066-0|location=New York|oclc=3843144}}</ref>{{Rp|109}} Forms of drawn thread work were known and created throughout Europe, often for ecclesiastical purposes or to decorate shrouds. Early examples have been found in which the work is done on linen so fine that magnification is needed to see the work.<ref name=":1" />
