== Early life == Edith was born on September 26, 1876, in [[Grand Island, Nebraska]]. Her father, [[Othman A. Abbott|Othman Ali Abbott]], was a lawyer and Nebraska's first [[List of Lieutenant Governors of Nebraska|Lieutenant Governor]] (1877β1879).
