==Early life== She was born at her family's home on [[Kirribilli, New South Wales|Kirribilli Point]] in Sydney, Australia, to Henry Herron Beauchamp (1825β1907), a wealthy shipping merchant, and Elizabeth (nicknamed Louey) Weiss Lassetter (1836β1919). She was called May by her family. She had four brothers and a sister.<ref name=jasper>Arnim, Jasper von (2003) [http://von-arnim.net/files/portr_elizabeth_engl.pdf Elizabeth von Arnim], von-arnim.net. When she was three years old, the family moved to England, where they lived in London but also spent several years in Switzerland.<ref name=usborne/><ref name=ODNB>[http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/35883 Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, online edition (UK library card required): ''Arnim, Mary Annette [May] von'']. Arnim visited her cousin often during this period.<ref name=worms/> They got on well, although Mansfield considered the much wealthier Arnim to be patronizing.<ref>Katherine Mansfield, Vincent O'Sullivan, ed., et al.
