== Etymology ==
The word "emerald" is derived (via {{langx|fro|esmeraude}} and {{langx|enm|emeraude}}), from [[Vulgar Latin]]: ''esmaralda/esmaraldus'', a variant of [[Latin]] ''smaragdus'', which was via {{langx|grc|σμάραγδος}} (smáragdos; "green gem").
