The terms ''autonym'', ''endonym'', ''exonym'' and ''xenonym'' are formed by adding specific [[prefix]]es to the [[list of Greek and Latin roots in English/H–O|Greek root word]] {{lang|grc|ὄνομα}} ({{transliteration|grc|ónoma}}) {{gloss|name}}, from [[Proto-Indo-European language|Proto-Indo-European]] ''{{PIE|{{wikt-lang|en|Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/h₁nómn̥|*h₃nómn̥}}}}''.

The prefixes added to these terms are also derived from Greek:
