== Etymology == The English name Fishguard derives from [[Old Norse]] {{lang|non|Fiskigarðr}} meaning "fish catching enclosure",<ref>Charles, B. G., ''The Placenames of Pembrokeshire'', National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1992, {{ISBN|0-907158-58-7}}, p. 50</ref> cognate with Modern English ''{{lang|en|fish}}'' + ''{{lang|en|yard}}.'' In Welsh, {{lang|non|Abergwaun}} means "the mouth of the [[River Gwaun]]", the name of the river referring to the high, wet, level ground of a marsh or moor.<ref>{{Cite book|last=Mills|first=A.
