== Names == Fortrose was historically known as the ''Chanonry of Ross'', as it was where the [[Canon (title)|canons]] of Fortrose Cathedral made their homes.<ref>{{cite web|title=Fortrose|publisher=Am Baile – Highland History and Culture|url=https://www.ambaile.org.uk/asset/588/|access-date=28 January 2025}}</ref> It is still known in Gaelic as {{lang|gd|A' Chananaich}}, meaning "place of canons".<ref>{{cite book|title=Place-Names of Ross and Cromarty|date=1904|last=Watson|first=W.
