== Early life and military career == Halder was born in [[Würzburg]], the son of an officer. In 1902, he joined an artillery regiment under the command of his father. Halder was educated at the [[War Academy (Kingdom of Bavaria)|Bavarian War Academy]], graduating in 1914. During [[World War I]], he served in a variety of staff roles and was awarded the [[Iron Cross]] 1st Class. In 1919, he was transferred to the ''[[Reichswehr]]'', where he served in staff and training roles, including under [[Walther von Brauchitsch]] in the army training department. In 1931, he was appointed as chief of staff of a military district. After being promoted to ''[[generalmajor]]'' (general-major) in October 1934, Halder served as the commander of the [[7th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)|7th Infantry Division]] in Munich.{{sfn|Wichmann|2014}}
