==Early life==
Dean was born in [[Arcadia, Louisiana|Arcadia]],<ref name=pfhof/> the seat of [[Bienville Parish]] in north [[Louisiana]]. He grew up {{convert|20|mi}} east in [[Ruston, Louisiana|Ruston]], where he attended the all-Black, [[school segregation in the United States|segregated]] Lincoln High School.
