==Names== In [[Russian language|Russian]], "Grozny" means "fearsome", "menacing", or "redoubtable", the same word as in Ivan Grozny ([[Ivan the Terrible]]). While the official name in [[Chechen language|Chechen]] is the same, informally the city is known as "{{lang|ce|Соьлжа-Гӏала}}" ("{{lang|ce-Latn|Sölƶa-Ġala}}"), which literally means "the city ({{lang|ce|гӏала}}) on the [[Sunzha River]] ({{lang|ce|Соьлжа}})".{{citation needed|date=July 2015}} In 1996, during the [[First Chechen War]], the authorities of the [[Chechen republic of Ichkeria]] renamed the city '''Dzhokhar-Ghala''' ({{langx|ce|Джохар-ГӀала, Dƶoxar-Ġala}}), literally '''Dzhokhar City''', or '''Dzhokhar'''/'''Djohar''' for short, after [[Dzhokhar Dudayev]], the first president of the republic, killed by the Russian armed forces.{{citation needed|date=July 2015}} In December 2005, the Chechen parliament voted to rename the city "Akhmad-Kala" (after [[Akhmad Kadyrov]])<ref name="RIANews1">[[RIA Novosti]].
