In [[Russian language|Russian]], "Grozny" means "fearsome", "menacing", or "redoubtable", the same word as in Ivan Grozny ([[Ivan the Terrible]]). While the official name in [[Chechen language|Chechen]] is the same, informally the city is known as "{{lang|ce|Соьлжа-Гӏала}}" ("{{lang|ce-Latn|Sölƶa-Ġala}}"), which literally means "the city ({{lang|ce|гӏала}}) on the [[Sunzha River]] ({{lang|ce|Соьлжа}})".{{citation needed|date=July 2015}}
