He graduated from [[Monterey High School (Monterey, California)|Monterey High School]] in [[Monterey, California]]. Edwards played [[college football]] at the [[California Golden Bears football|University of California, Berkeley]] in [[1972 California Golden Bears football team|1972]] and [[1974 California Golden Bears football team|1974]], at junior college [[Monterey Peninsula College]] in 1973, and at [[1975 San Diego State Aztecs football team|San Diego State University (SDSU)]] in his senior year, 1975. He graduated from SDSU with a degree in criminal justice. He helped promote Monterey County Special Olympics for several years. His public involvement helped educate Monterey County residents about the importance of athletics with the developmentally disabled.
