==Birth and early life== Maxim was born in [[Sangerville, Maine|Sangerville]], [[Maine]] on 5 February 1840, into a family of [[French Huguenot]] origin.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.abebooks.co.uk/9781332268122/Life-Work-Sir-Hiram-Maxim-1332268129/plp |title=The Life and Work of Sir Hiram Maxim: Knight, Chevalier De La Legion D'honneur, Etc |publisher= Forgotten Books}}</ref> He became an apprentice [[Coach (vehicle)|coach]]builder at the age of 14 and ten years later, took up a job at the machine works of his uncle, Levi Stephens, at [[Fitchburg, Massachusetts]].
