==Archaeology== A [[Neolithic British Isles|Neolithic]] axe-head has been found in the parish,<ref name=VCH>{{harvnb|Wright|Rosen|Keeling|Meekings|1978|pp=230β246}}</ref> suggesting a human presence before 2500 BC. About {{convert|1.5|mi}} southwest of the village near Valance Farm is a late [[Bronze Age Britain|Bronze Age]] [[bowl barrow]], close to the supposed route of the pre-[[Roman Britain|Roman]] [[Icknield Way]].<ref name=VCH/> The barrow and its surrounding ditch are well-preserved, about {{convert|80|ft}} in diameter and {{convert|3|to|4|ft|1}} high.<ref>{{NHLE |num= 1015009 |desc=Bowl barrow 250m WSW of Valance Farm |date=15 March 1982 |accessdate=31 August 2013}}</ref> Other Bronze Age remains found in the parish include a spear-head, a gold bracelet and a [[torq]].<ref name=VCH/> South of the village on the side of Coploe Hill is a series of earth banks that may also be Bronze Age.<ref name=VCH/> They start about {{convert|1200|yd}} south of the village and extend {{convert|0.5|mi|m}} south, as far as the Essex county boundary. About {{convert|700|yd}} south of the parish church, just west of Frogge Street, is the site of a [[Roman villa]].<ref>{{NHLE |num= 1006872 |desc=Roman villa site S of Rose Villa |accessdate=31 August 2013}}</ref> The site is just across the River Cam from the site of a [[Castra|Roman fort]] at [[Great Chesterford]]. The villa was of modest size, and it had an outhouse or barn.<ref name=Pevsner112>{{harvnb|Pevsner|1970|p=412}}</ref> The site was excavated in 1842.<ref name=Pevsner112/> About {{convert|0.5|mi|m}} north of the village, just over the boundary in [[Duxford]] parish, is the site of a [[Romano-British culture|Romano-British]] settlement.<ref>{{NHLE |num= 1004672 |desc=Romano-British settlement site |date= |accessdate=31 August 2013}}</ref>
