== Definition and relationship to the electromagnetic spectrum == There is no universally accepted definition of the range of infrared radiation. Typically, it is taken to extend from the nominal red edge of the visible spectrum at 780 nm to 1 mm. This range of wavelengths corresponds to a [[Frequency spectrum|frequency]] range of approximately 430 THz down to 300 GHz. Beyond infrared is the microwave portion of the [[electromagnetic spectrum]]. Increasingly, terahertz radiation is counted as part of the microwave band, not infrared, moving the band edge of infrared to 0.1 mm (3 THz). {| class=wikitable style="float:center; margin:2px; text-align:center;" |+ Position in the electromagnetic spectrum<ref>{{Cite book |title=CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics |publisher=CRC Press |year=2011 |isbn=978-1-4398-5511-9 |editor-last=Haynes, William M. |edition=92nd |page=10.233 |ref=Haynes}}</ref> |- !
