==History== Planning for INEX started in 1996 and it became operational in April 1997<ref>{{cite web |title=The First Twenty Years |url=https://www.inex.ie/about-us/history/first-twenty-years/ |website=INEX |accessdate=30 October 2018}}</ref> with the backing of its four founding members; [[BT Ireland|EUnet Ireland]], [[HEAnet]], [[Indigo Internet|Indigo]] and [[Eir_(telecommunications)|Telecom Internet]] with the objective of locally exchanging [[Internet Protocol|IP]] traffic between Irish-based ISPs, rather than using an external exchange or transit providers.
