==Early life==
Before his foray into film, Uys was a mathematics teacher in his hometown of [[Boksburg]].<ref name="nyt obit">{{cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1996/02/02/nyregion/jamie-uys-74-the-director-of-the-gods-must-be-crazy.html|title=Jamie Uys, 74, the Director Of 'The Gods Must Be Crazy'|date=2 February 1996|website=[[The New York Times]]|access-date=25 July 2020}}</ref> He then married Hettie, a fellow mathematics teacher, and the couple started farming and opening trading posts along the [[Palala River]]. He was later appointed local magistrate and Justice of the Peace.
