Jefferson C. Davis was born in [[Clark County, Indiana]], near present-day [[Memphis, Indiana|Memphis]], [[Indiana]].<ref>Jefferson Columbus Davis Collection, Rare Books and Manuscripts, Indiana State Library [http://www.in.gov/library/finding-aid/4593.htm] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180918123716/https://www.in.gov/library/finding-aid/4593.htm|date=September 18, 2018}}</ref> He was born to William Davis Jr. (1800–1879) and Mary Drummond-Davis (1801–1881), the oldest of their eight children. His father was a farmer.
