==Early life== Gordon was born in Los Angeles, on February 18, 1915, to Benjamin Lowell Gordon (1875β1946) and Lulu Pearl Evans (1893β1984).<ref name="bballref">{{cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/g/gordojo01.shtml|title=Joe Gordon Statistics|work=Baseball-Reference.com|access-date=2008-12-09}}</ref> The family moved to [[Oregon]], where he attended [[Jefferson High School (Portland, Oregon)|Jefferson High School]].<ref name="oregonian">{{cite news|title=Portland native Joe Gordon elected to baseball's Hall of Fame|date=December 8, 2008|work=The Oregonian|publisher=OregonLive.com}}</ref> After graduation, Gordon attended the [[University of Oregon]],<ref name="bballref"/> where he also competed as a [[running back|halfback]] on the [[college football|football]] team as well as in [[gymnastics]], [[football (soccer)|soccer]] and the [[long jump]].
