==History== Mapleton was [[plat]]ted in 1857 when the railroad was extended to that point.<ref>{{cite book | url=https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_bH8HtIwXzdcC | title=History of Western Iowa, Its Settlement and Growth | publisher=Western Publishing Company | year=1882 | pages=[https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_bH8HtIwXzdcC/page/n251 252]}}</ref> It was named from its location near the [[Maple River (Iowa)|Maple River]].<ref>{{cite book|author=Chicago and North Western Railway Company|title=A History of the Origin of the Place Names Connected with the Chicago & North Western and Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railways|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OspBAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA98|year=1908|page=98}}</ref> Between 7:20 and 7:30 p.m. on [[Tornado outbreak of April 9β11, 2011|April 9, 2011]], a rated EF3 wedge tornado ripped through the western half of Mapleton. Early reports said that 50β60% of the town had been damaged or destroyed by the tornado which appeared to be 3/4ths of a mile wide. No serious injuries were reported.
