Freeman's paternal grandfather, Leonard W. Freeman, was a medic in the [[British Expeditionary Force (World War II)|British Expeditionary Force]] during [[World War II]] and was killed in action at [[Dunkirk]] just a few days before the [[Dunkirk evacuation]].<ref name=whydw1>{{cite web|title=Martin Freeman|url=http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/episode/martin-freeman|publisher=Who Do You Think You Are?|access-date=3 July 2012}}</ref> Leonard's father, Richard, was born blind and worked as a piano tuner and organist.<ref name=whydw1/> 

Freeman was raised in his mother's [[Catholic Church|Catholic]] faith, and attended the [[Salesian School, Chertsey|Salesian School]] in [[Chertsey|Chertsey, Surrey]], before attending [[Brooklands College]] in nearby [[Weybridge]] for media studies.<ref name="independent">{{cite news|last=Viner|first=Brian|date=30 November 2012|title=Martin Freeman: No ordinary Bilbo Baggins|work=[[The Independent]]|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/martin-freeman-no-ordinary-bilbo-baggins-8372536.html}}</ref> His older brother, Tim, became a singer with the group [[Frazier Chorus]].
