==Early life and education==
Kelly was involved with [[Urmston Musical Theatre]] in [[Urmston]], [[Lancashire]], most notably playing the role of Louis in a production of ''[[The King and I]]'' in 1963.<ref name="king">{{Cite web |work= The Urmston Musical Theatre |url= http://www.umt.org.uk/kingandi/kingandi.htm |title=The King and I - 1963 |date= 1963 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20111002141540/http://www.umt.org.uk/kingandi/kingandi.htm |url-status= dead |archive-date= 2 October 2011 }}</ref> Kelly appeared regularly at [[Liverpool]]'s [[Everyman Theatre, Liverpool|Everyman Theatre]].

In his early forties, he studied at the [[Open University]] where he gained a degree in psychology.<ref name="stars"/>
