Merrifield is located in eastern Fairfax County at {{coord|38|52|23|N|77|14|35|W|type:city}} (38.873144, −77.242994).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=2011-04-23|date=2011-02-12|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref> It is bounded by [[Interstate 66|I-66]] on the north, the [[Capital Beltway]] on the east, [[Arlington Boulevard]] ([[U.S. Route 50]]) on the south, and Nutley Street ([[Virginia State Highway 243]]) on the west. Neighboring communities are [[Oakton, Virginia|Oakton]] to the west, the town of [[Vienna, Virginia|Vienna]] to the north, [[Dunn Loring, Virginia|Dunn Loring]] to the northeast, [[Idylwood, Virginia|Idylwood]] and [[West Falls Church, Virginia|West Falls Church]] to the east, [[Annandale, Virginia|Annandale]] at the southeast corner of Merrifield, [[Woodburn, Fairfax County, Virginia|Woodburn]] and [[Mantua, Virginia|Mantua]] to the south, and the city of [[Fairfax, Virginia|Fairfax]] to the southwest. Downtown [[Washington, D.C.]], is {{convert|13|mi}} to the east.
