==Etymology== middangeard 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌿𐌽𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 The Old Norse name non is cognate with Gothic got (attested in the Gospel of Luke as a translation of the Greek grc), Old Saxon osx (in Heliand), Old High German goh (in Muspilli), and Old English ang. The latter, which appears in both prose and poetry, was transformed to enm or enm ("Middle-earth") in Middle English literature. All these forms stem from Common Germanic mis, a compound of mis ("middle") and mis ("yard, enclosure"). In early Germanic cosmology, it stands alongside the term world (cf. Old English ang, Old Saxon osx, Old High German goh, Old Frisian ofs, Old Norse non), itself from a Common Germanic compound *wira-alđiz ("man-age"), which refers to the inhabited world, i.e. the realm of humankind.
