The Modoc, like the neighboring [[Klamath people|Klamath]], spoke dialectic varieties of the [[Klamath language|Klamathan/Lutuamian language]], a branch of the [[Plateau Penutian languages|Plateau Penutian language family]].  Both peoples called themselves ''maklaks'', meaning "people".<ref>Waldman, pp. 134, 168</ref>  To distinguish between the tribes, the Modoc called themselves ''Moatokni maklaks'', from ''muat'' meaning "South".<ref>Kroeber, p. 319</ref>  The [[Achomawi]], a band of the [[Pit River tribe]], called them ''Lutuami'', meaning "Lake Dwellers".<ref name='Pease' />
