==Similar literary devices== Monologues are similar to [[Poetry|poems]], epiphanies, and others, in that, they involve one 'voice' speaking but there are differences between them. For example, a soliloquy involves a character relating their thoughts and feelings to themself and to the audience without addressing any of the other characters. A monologue is the thoughts of a person spoken out loud.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/soliloquy |title=Soliloquy β Definition and More |publisher=Merriam-Webster Dictionary |access-date=2013-08-16 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130706041614/http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/soliloquy |archive-date=6 July 2013 |df=dmy-all }}</ref> Monologues are also distinct from apostrophes, in which the speaker or writer addresses an imaginary person, inanimate object, or idea.<ref name="autogenerated1">{{cite web |url=http://www.pleasanton.k12.ca.us/fhsweb/thoeb/RomeoandJuliet.htm |title=The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare |website=Betty Thoe's Homepage |publisher= Pleasanton Unified School District |access-date=2013-08-16 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130902062728/http://www.pleasanton.k12.ca.us/fhsweb/thoeb/RomeoandJuliet.htm |archive-date=2 September 2013 |df=dmy-all }}</ref> Asides differ from each of these not only in length (asides are shorter) but also in that asides are not heard by other characters even in situations where they logically should be (e.g. two characters engaging in a [[dialogue]] interrupted by one of them delivering an aside).<ref name="autogenerated1" />
