== Titles == Muhammad ibn Ali, the ninth of the [[Twelve Imams]], is occasionally known in [[Shia Islam|Shia]] sources as al-Taqi ({{langx|ar|التقى|lit=the pious|links=no}}),{{sfn|Donaldson|1933|p=190}} but more commonly as al-Jawad ({{langx|ar|الجواد|lit=the generous|links=no}}) for his munificence.{{sfn|Pierce|2016|p=43}} The Imam is cited in the Shia [[hadith]] literature as Abu Ja'far al-Thani ({{langx|ar|ابو جعفر الثاني|links=no|lit=Abu Ja'far, the second}}),{{sfn|Medoff|2016}} with the title Abu Ja'far reserved for his predecessor, [[Muhammad al-Baqir]] ({{died in|732}}), the fifth of the Twelve Imams.{{sfn|Baghestani|2014}} His {{Transliteration|ar|[[kunya (Arabic)|kunya]]}} is Abu Ali ({{Langx|ar|ابو علي|links=no|lit=}}),{{sfn|Baghestani|2014}} though he was also known by his contemporaries as Ibn al-Rida ({{langx|ar|ابن الرضا|lit=son of al-Rida|links=no}}) because he was the only child of [[Ali al-Rida]].{{sfn|Medoff|2016}}
