== Etymology == The word muslin likely originates from Masulipatam (Machilipatnam), an ancient Bengal (now Bangladesh) port known for fine cotton textiles. The earliest recorded references to muslin come from Greek, Roman, and Arab sources linking its production to India (Masulipatam and Dacca). Ptolemy (2nd Century CE) mentions "Maisolia" (believed to be Masulipatam) as a major center for cotton trade. Marco Polo (1298 CE) refers to "Mosolins". Jean-Baptiste Tavernier in his book Travels in India, Vol. II, also documents the exceptional quality of Indian muslin, describing it as so fine that "you can hardly feel it in your hand".
