== Etymology == ''Niyama'' (नियम) is derived from the Sanskrit root ''niyam'' (नियम्) which means "to hold". Thus, ''niyama'' translates to "rule", "observances", or "practices of self-restraint".<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Cusack |first=Carmen |date=2012 |title=Alternative dispute resolution and niyama, the second limb of Yoga Sutra |journal=Journal of Peace Education and Social Justice |volume=6 |issue=2 |pages=107–122}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Chicago |first=The University of |last2=Libraries (CRL) |first2=Center for Research |title=Digital South Asia Library |url=https://dsal.uchicago.edu/ |access-date=2024-06-04 |website=dsal.uchicago.edu |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Sivasubramaniam |first=Thirunavukkarasu |date=2019-05-24 |title=Niyama |url=https://www.classicyoga.co.in/2019/05/niyama/ |access-date=2024-06-04 |website=Classic Yoga |language=en-US}}</ref>
