Allen]] provides empirical evidence for the "not invented here" syndrome, showing that the performance of R&D project groups declines after about five years, which they attribute to the groups becoming increasingly insular and communicating less with key information sources outside the group.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Katz |first=Ralph |last2=Allen |first2=Thomas J. |date=January 1982 |title=Investigating the Not Invented Here (NIH) syndrome: A look at the performance, tenure, and communication patterns of 50 R & D Project Groups |url=https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-9310.1982.tb00478.x |journal=R&D Management |language=en |volume=12 |issue=1 |pages=7β20 |doi=10.1111/j.1467-9310.1982.tb00478.x |issn=0033-6807|url-access=subscription }}</ref>
