==Development== {{Expand section|date=March 2009}} In 1934, delays in the design and production of the [[Panzer III]] and [[Panzer IV]] medium tanks were becoming apparent.<ref name=":2">{{Cite web|title=Panzer II Light Tank|url=http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/weapons_panzer_II.html|access-date=2021-12-31|website=www.historyofwar.org}}</ref> The [[Panzer I]] had no weapons capable of defeating armor and thus no chance of success against enemy tanks so a stopgap tank was developed.{{sfn|Jentz|1996|pp=29-30}} Designs for a stopgap tank were solicited from [[Krupp]], [[MAN SE|MAN]], [[Henschel]], and [[Daimler-Benz]]. Design work on the Panzer II began on 27 January 1934.{{sfn|Jentz|1996|p=33}} The first experimental model was ready in February 1935.{{sfn|Jentz|1996|p=33}} The final design was based on the [[Panzer I]], but larger, and with a [[Gun turret|turret]] mounting a 20 mm [[autocannon]] anti-tank gun and [[leaf spring]] suspension<ref name=":2" /> Production began in 1935, but it took another eighteen months for the first combat-ready tank to be delivered.<ref name=":2" />
