==Early life== Percy Storkey was born on 9 September 1893<ref name=Derkenne/>{{#tag:ref|Storkey gave 1891 as his year of birth when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force.<ref name="NAA">{{cite web |title=NAA: B2455, Storkey, Percy Valentine|url=https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=1935386 |publisher=National Archives of Australia |access-date=8 March 2020}}</ref>|group=Note}} in [[Napier, New Zealand|Napier]], New Zealand, to Samuel Storkey, an Englishman who worked as a printer and his New Zealand-born wife, Sarah {{nee|Dean}}.{{sfn|Gliddon|2013|p=149}} Samuel Storkey had moved to Napier as a young boy with his father William. Percy Storkey was educated at [[Napier Boys' High School]], where he was [[Dux#Education|dux]] of the school in his final year, and later [[Victoria University of Wellington|Victoria College]] in [[Wellington]],<ref name=Derkenne>{{cite AuDB |last=Derkenne |first=Warren |title=Storkey, Percy Valentine (1893β1969) |id2=storkey-percy-valentine-8687 |access-date=29 March 2013}}</ref> where he studied fine arts.{{sfn|Wigmore|1986|pp=116β117}} As a teenager, Storkey served in the [[Territorial Force (New Zealand)|Territorial Force]] as an infantryman with the [[Wellington Infantry Regiment (NZEF)|Wellington Regiment]], eventually achieving the rank of [[colour sergeant]] after five years of service.{{sfn|Gliddon|2013|p=149}}{{sfn|Wigmore|1986|pp=116β117}} In around 1911 or 1912, Storkey moved to [[Sydney]] in Australia and worked as a clerk for a steamship company. Within a year he was on the administrative staff at the [[University of Sydney]].
